Celtic Tree Month of Holly

ree

Today, marks the start of the Celtic Tree Month of Holly. Despite holly being prevalent in Winter, it symbolises that we have entered the darker half of the year as the Holly King retakes the throne from the Oak King. It is also known to repel lightening which can, of course, occur during the Summer heat.Holly trees are known for their protection, peace and cheer. They are a welcome nest for birds, hedgehogs and fairies alike- particularly when these evergreens are abundant as the colder months draw in. The adaptive holly tree provides many a meal for deer, mice and insects galore and was seen as a symbol of fertility. Traditionally, the leaves were used as a diuretic and diaphoretic but are used, by herbalists today, to alleviate respiratory issues. The flowers provide essential pollen for bees and whilst toxic to humans, birds rely on the festive berries as a food source. Holly wood is used for furniture, fire wood and Harry Potter’s wand! Mythologically speaking, holly charms were used to protect homes and people from all manner of negative entities and evil spirits. Holly water can be made easily and used to bless your home.
